Melba Arlene Hora, 86, Legal Secretary/Administrative Assistant, joined the heavenly angel choir on July 8, 2017. Melba was born March 20, 1931 in Newton Township, Ohio to parents Thomas and Velma (Godown) Harshbarger.
Melba grew up in the Miami County Ohio area where her family farmed. She was a top-notch tobacco planter – in demand from an early age because of her great skill in setting the plants. She was an excellent student graduating from Covington High School. Melba worked for several firms in the Dayton area, first as a secretary, then moving into legal secretarial work.
Melba was spunky and outgoing – she never met a stranger. During her single days, she always had several roommates, and the rumor was if you wanted to get married you should go live with Melba – she’d help find you the right man! Melba met her husband Harold Hora on a blind date. They celebrated 56 years of marriage before his death in 2016.
Melba loved playing games and was very competitive – bridge, euchre, and Wa Hoo were some of her favorites. She also was a fantastic baker, being featured in the Tulsa Tribune one Christmas as well as winning prizes for her nut brittles at the Tulsa State Fair. Her date bars were always in demand at any gathering with sweets.
Melba will be remembered for her kind and generous spirit. She cared deeply for her Lord, and for people – she always had a smile, word of encouragement and genuine interest in them. Melba enjoyed her family, friends, Bible Studies, bridge groups, Mapco ladies and volunteering with Assistance League of Tulsa in various activities. She will be greatly missed by all those she interacted with.
Preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Harold, her parents, Tom and Velma Harshbarger, three brothers, Dale, Gerald, and Larry, brother-in-law Lawrence Hora, and nephew Doug Harshbarger. She is survived by daughters, Bambi Hora of Edmond, and Paige Hora of Tulsa and granddog Peanut. Melba also leaves behind a sister, Melody Whalen, sisters-in-law, Julia Harshbarger and Linda Harshbarger, brothers-in-law Charles (Shirlee) Hara, and Raymond Hora, several nieces, nephews, and their families, all of Ohio, as well as many cousins and dear friends
